How to minimize Metformin side effects like nausea?

I just started taking Metformin 500mg daily. I am experiencing terrible nausea and diarrhea about 1 hour after taking it. Does this get better over time? Any tips on what to eat to prevent this?

Hello. Nausea is a very common side effect during the initiation phase of Metformin. Two key tips: 1. Ensure you take the tablet midway through your largest meal. 2. Discuss with your physician about starting with a low dose (e.g. 500mg once daily) and slowly titrating up. If symptoms persist, ask about the Extended Release (ER) formulation, which releases the active compound slower and is significantly gentler on the GI tract.

Dr. House is correct. The Extended Release (XR/ER) option resolves gastric side effects for nearly 80% of patients. Also, avoid taking it with high-carb meals, as this can exacerbate bloating and flatulence. Drinking ginger tea can also help alleviate the immediate nausea.
