What Causes Heartburn?
Heartburn is a burning sensation in the chest caused by gastric acid rising into the esophagus. This occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) fails to close properly.
Common Triggers to Avoid
- Spicy, greasy, and highly acidic foods (like citrus and tomatoes).
- Carbonated drinks, caffeine, and alcohol.
- Lying down within three hours after eating.
OTC Relief Categories
For persistent heartburn, several medical treatments are available:
- Antacids: Provide immediate, temporary relief by neutralizing stomach acid.
- H2 Blockers (e.g. Famotidine / Pepcid): Reduce acid production at the cellular level, providing relief that lasts up to 12 hours.
